SAI at the Norfolk Southern Wheelersburg Terminal

Norfolk Southern Wheelersburg Terminal –

The Norfolk Southern Wheelersburg Terminal (NSWT) is located on the Ohio River at mile marker 345 in Wheelersburg, Ohio. Most coal is delivered to the terminal via railcar, with some coal occasionally received by truck. All inbound coals go to stockpile, direct to river barges, or direct to a train load-out. Outbound coals can be direct dumped or loaded from stockpiles into two traveling hopper cars. The hopper cars can be loaded from both sides allowing intricate blending from multiple stockpiles. Inbound and outbound mechanical sampling is utilized at this terminal.

Inbound Mechanical Sampling System –

The inbound coals at NSWT are sampled by a two-stage Precision Samplers Inc. (PSI) mechanical sampling system. The design is a mix of a cross-belt primary stage and a falling-stream secondary stage, with a hammer-mill crusher between them. The system operates in accordance with ASTM and ISO standards.

Truck-received coal can be sampled via a mobile truck-mounted auger sampler. The collected increments are processed via a Holmes crusher with a PSI sub-sampler for sample reduction.

Outbound Mechanical Sampling –

In the fall of 2006, a new PSI mechanical sampling system was installed by SAI. This two-stage cross-belt, single hammer-mill crusher design - with a mechanical size/raw sample collection device - replaced the original Redding system located in the train load-out tower. The new system operates in accordance with ASTM and ISO standards, and can be utilized for the sampling of barge and train load-out consignments.
