SAI at the Kinder Morgan Shipyard River Terminal
Charleston, South Carolina
Shipyard River Terminal –
The Shipyard River Terminal (SRT) is a multi-purpose facility located on the Cooper River in Charleston, South Carolina. The facility handles coal, petroleum coke, cement, oils, and various other liquids and materials.
SRT began handling coal in 1982, and a major expansion effort commenced in 2005 to service a growing import coal market. The first phase of the expansion came online in May 2006 with the addition of two new high-capacity Gottwald cranes for vessel discharge; a new Kanawha train load-out; expanded rail tracking; and a new James A. Redding mechanical sampling system.
The terminal is served by the Norfolk Southern and the CSXT railroads. Currently, unit trains up to 100 railcars are loaded for shipment to the utility market throughout the southeast United States.
The SRT facility and expansion is but one of Kinder Morgan efforts to meet the rising demand for import coal. (See link to SAI operations at the Kinder Morgan PIX Terminal, Newport News, Virginia).
Mechanical Sampling System –
A James A. Redding mechanical sampling system was installed in the spring of 2006 as part of the terminal’s initial expansion. It is located on the conveyor line supplying coal and petroleum coke to a new Kanawha train load-out. The sampling system is a two-stage cross-belt design; with a single hammer-mill crusher; and with a PLC-controlled time-based operating program. SAI provides 24/7 service in the operation and maintenance of the system.
Support Services –
SAI offers additional services at the SRT facility, and to the utility and industrial markets throughout the region, in activity such as temperature monitoring surveys, cargo inspections, barge surveying, and mechanical sampling system auditing and maintenance. We also provide sample preparation services for SAI-owner laboratories activity within the region.
